The Hebrew word ‘emuna’ is usually translated as a sense of strong faith or belief in the Creator of the world, but it’s much, more than that. When you really have emuna, you know that God exists, you know He’s running the show, you believe that everything God does is good, even if you can’t understand that intellectually, and you understand that every tiny thing that occurs in your life is a message from the Creator.
Getting to this level of emuna clearly is not something that happens overnight: it requires some serious introspection, inner work and effort, but as you’ll learn over the next few posts, any investment you make in building your emuna will be more than worth it.
How emuna is connected to our ability to 'be'
Emuna is directly related to our ability to 'be', in every sense of the word, and is deeply connected to a number of fundamental issues that have a huge impact on our spiritual, emotional and physical health including:
- Standing up for ourselves
- Overcoming and growing from childhood events and traumas
- Feeling grounded and having a good grasp of reality
- Feeling secure, supported and loved
- Being able to appreciate and accept ourselves, and our individuality
- The ability to cope with and withstand difficulties (aka, ‘emotional resilience’)
Emuna = Connection to God
Emuna is the foundation of our connection to God and the prime indicator of how strong our spiritual health really is. As body, mind and soul are all interconnected and interdependent, strong emuna is also the bedrock of good physical health

Emuna really means that we see God in the world, and we recognise Him in every detail of our lives. When we don't have emuna, or we have weak emuna (join the club!), it can directly affect our ability to 'be' in every sense. If this area is out, or weak, it will severely compromise every other Deeper Need we have up the chain.
In the next post, we’ll explore some of the common emotional and physical problems that can occur when the first Deeper Need, emuna (faith /belief) is out.
